This is a MILLINGER + HOWELLS Rug Collection

Christiane Millinger Handmade Rugs and Howells Architecture + Design are delighted to present a series of collaborations exploring the timeless beauty and craftsmanship of handmade rugs and how they remain innovative in modern architecture and contemporary interior design.

Beginning in 2020, Michael Howells sought to combine his lifelong journey in art and design with a deepening appreciation of tribal rugs, specifically, how this unique medium could be given a fresh and innovative approach. Having worked with Christiane on numerous interior projects for residential clients and their rug needs, Michael began to explore the reality of using original works as concepts for a new series of area rugs. Christiane was instantly on-board, and together they have refined his concepts using her 30+ years of experience, first as a restorer of historic pieces, then as one of the premier providers of made to order rugs and as the curator of one of the finest selections of handmade rugs and carpets in the United States.

The initial THIS IS Collection was a homage to tribal design and how a fresh look and perspective on these pieces can illustrate that sound design never truly goes entirely out of style. The Italian Dream designs take this idea even further as entirely newly conceived concepts are combined with the finest quality Nepalese wool and weaving facilities to bring this fresh vision to life.

These designs can be made to order in any size, colors, and configurations. Please contact us directly to inquire about our custom and bespoke area rug capabilities.

Italian Dream Series

As with past designs, this new one began with selecting a palette and then opening oneself up to painterly play. At a certain point in that process the “marbled paper” motif emerged.

THIS IS a Millinger + Howells Series

In a world full of beautiful objects, why design another rug collection? How can it be fresh and relevant?

Those questions inspired THIS IS A MILLINGER + HOWELLS RUG, a series of contemporary carpets designed by architect Michael Howells, colorized by textile expert and collector Christiane Millinger, and hand-knotted by exceptional artisans in Nepal.
