4x6 Balouch Soumak with Birds and Tree Design
Balouch Soumaks are a type of textile that used a combination of weaving and knotting techniques to made a surface that combines the looks of a raised pile rug with a more woven, flat surface. Not by cutting or embroidery methods, these precise and intricate designs are planned well in advance and done simultaneously as the piece is made. The weavers producing these are among the most skilled in these tribal communities.
The tree of life is ancient symbol in Persian art and literature. It is said to represent the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds by the means in which a tree exists: rooted deep into the ground, existing as a object on the plane of existence, and reaching for the divine into the heavens. It also serves as metaphor for life and fertility signified by its renewal with the seasons and abundance with fruiting trees. Very often paired with birds, themselves seen as messengers of the divine.
The green tones used in these rugs is made using buckthorn, also called Persian, berries when fully ripe. Green tones are also made by combining the yellow dyes produced from saffron, turmeric, and unripened berries with indigo dyes as well.
