Mid 19th Century Tribal Shekarlou Qashqaii
Mid 19th Century Tribal Pattern Rug
This Shekarlu rug is a striking example of tribal symbolism woven in intricate design. Bold “S”-shaped forms ripple throughout the piece, each likely representing stylized animal heads—a recurring motif that adds rhythm and narrative to the visual tapestry. These same animal forms appear as hook-like accents outlining the central diamond medallions, adorning tree-like motifs, and repeating in hexagonal elements across the field.
Smaller circular motifs, free from animal features, soften the composition and are thought to represent flowers or bouquets of vibrant plant life.
One of the most captivating elements is the repeated image of a four-legged animal, most likely a horse. The braided tail and braided reins are distinctive clues, pointing to the importance of this animal in Shekarlu life and lore. Whether seen as a symbol of power, mobility, or companionship, the horse grounds the piece in tribal tradition.
Framing it all is a bold primary border rich with hexagonal animal head motifs. The inclusion of undyed wool within the border is not just a textural detail—it’s a hallmark of the Shekarlu weaving style, a signature of authenticity that sets this piece apart.
