The tree of life is ancient symbol in Persian art and literature. It is said to represent the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds by the means in which a tree exists: rooted deep into the ground, existing as a object on the plane of existence, and reaching for the divine into the heavens. It also serves as metaphor for life and fertility signified by its renewal with the seasons and abundance with fruiting trees. Very often paired with birds, themselves seen as messengers of the divine.

The pomegranate is also one of the more significant symbols in Persian art, literature, and culture. The ability for one to hold many small seeds and fruit within symbolizes prosperity and blessings of abundance, and is often part of wedding ceremonies. The red color and rich juice serve as metaphors for love, passion, and sacrifice in the works of the seminal Persian poet Hafez and this mental connection is an omnipresent part of Persian life. The fruit has a significant role in the Persian Yalda (Winter Solstice) festivals representing the red of the rising sun after the longest night and the hope of Spring abundance with the many seeds within.

The red dyes used in these rugs is made using the root of the madder plant. This plant must mature for at least five years prior to being harvested for dye making. The resulting red tones can range from intense and bright to more pastel coral tones depending on factors like dye concentration and whether the wool being dyed is of a lighter ivory tone or darker variety.

The Orange tones are the result of using dyes made from such things as the rinds of pomegranates, onion skins, and also previously run batches of red as they become less concentrated.
