Mamluk rugs are a style of carpet that can be confirmed to be being produced in Egypt as early as the latter half of the 15th Century, but some written accounts describe carpets believed to be Mamluks from even earlier. Mamluk carpets are notable for their strong geometric approach and primary usage of red, with some blues, yellows, and greens. Often described as possessing a kaleidoscopic feel due to the ways geometric shapes are defined, filled, and ultimately reflected back in mirror like fashion for a dense but balanced overall design. The borders very often feature an oval cartouche and medallion motif, illustrative of the Egyptian origins. But the influences range from Ottoman to Persian, and even some further Asian influences in these carpets.
