The pomegranate is one of the more significant symbols in Persian art, literature, and culture. The ability for one to hold many small seeds and fruit within symbolizes prosperity and blessings of abundance, and is often part of wedding ceremonies. The red color and rich juice serve as metaphors for love, passion, and sacrifice in the works of the seminal Persian poet Hafez and this mental connection is an omnipresent part of Persian life. The fruit has a significant role in the Persian Yalda (Winter Solstice) festivals representing the red of the rising sun after the longest night and the hope of Spring abundance with the many seeds within.
The blue-green tones used in this rugs is made using buckthorn, also called Persian, berries when fully ripe. Green tones are also made by combining the yellow dyes produced from saffron, turmeric, and unripened berries with indigo dyes as well.
