Erased Classic Collection Alcaraz Sky from Jan Kath
16th Century Spanish design with a 21st Century style.
With the Erased Classic Collection Jan Kath explores the aesthetics of decay and its interplay with more repetitive classic rug patterns. Inspired by the entropy of nature consuming and overtaking derelict industrial sites, Jan Kath sought to explore the process of severe ornamental design being subjected to extreme erasures, simulated tears and being etched with acid in the decimation of design, using the classic rug form as the muse for the creation of an entirely new visual language.
The Alcaraz Sky is based on a 16th Century Moorish inspired Spanish pattern, seen here as raised wool and silk, that has been subject to a reductive treatment in appearance, with the missing areas of the original carpet shown as a lower area of wool and nettle fibers in yellow. The resulting carpet has an almost topographical quality with the way the higher silvery and ivory white wool and silk blend resembles islands and fjords from above.
